Engine Replacement Process |
 |
We start the engine replacement process by carefully
removing the engine from the vehicle. D&S Engines has the facility
to properly remove, replace and store your vehicle while the engine
work is being performed. |
| The old engine is completely disassembled. During
this process we take note of any problematic areas in the engine block,
crankshaft and cylinder heads. |
 |
 |
After the engine is completely torn down we use a
number of different techniques to clean the engine components of grease,
oil and dirt. One of our specialized tools is a large oven, that literally
bakes the grease right off the engine block and cylinder heads. |
| After all the parts are cleaned they are carefully
inspected for flaws. If the component is damaged we can usually save
it with a special repair. If everything looks OK then we move on to
the machining process. You might have heard of a process called Magnafluxing.
This uses a magnetic field and special powder to check for cracks
that are not visible to the naked eye. This process eliminates that
risk that time and effort will be spent machining a damaged item. |
 |
 |
The engine block, cylinder heads, connecting rods
and crankshaft usually always need machining. By this process we remove
a small amount of material to insure that the engine's clearances
will be within tolerance. |
| It is extremely important that the surfaces of the
engine block and cylinder head are machined, this is called decking.
The process of decking helps to reduce the risk of head gasket failure
due to warped or uneven surfaces. |
 |
 |
Once all the machine work is done. The engine is
painted and reassembled. It is very important to check the engines
tolerances at this time to insure a long service life out of the engine.
When we assemble an engine we use only name brand quality parts. To
skimp on a connecting rod bolt or a push rod at this point is a risk
that we just won't take. |
| The final step of the engine rebuilding process is
the reinstallation of the new powerplant. We take great care in the
reinstallation of the engines to insure that we do not damage the
car, especially the collector vehicles. In many cases there are auxiliary
components that need to be blasted or polished, its the little details
that really make an new engine look and run the best that it can. |
 |
| Special Machining |
| There are other automotive components not related
to the engine that need special machine work. When replacing a clutch
in a manual transmission vehicle it is usually required to machine
the flywheel. This process allows for a smooth surface to engage the
clutch. Many times this process is ignored and the result is a chattery
clutch. There are some European vehicles that do not allow for flywheel
resurfacing, check with your service manual before proceeding. |

 |
D&S Engines can also machine engine accessories that
have a tendency to warp or wear. A flat mating surface is essential
on an exhaust manifold to eliminate gasket failures and leaks. We
can also repair broken studs and cracked flanges. |
| Radiator Repair and Restoration |
| D&S has on location a full radiator restoration shop.
If your vehicle is equipped with a repairable radiator we can bring
it to like new condition in our shop. New units are used to replace
the unrepairable or unrecorable radiators. Don't compromise your new
engine with a faulty radiator. Many of the units we repair are for
collectors cars that do not want to loose the original factory unit
for their vehicle. Contact our radiator shop directly at (248) 583-6790
and ask for Matthew. |
